Under the Pole

"Inspired by the great outdoors - in particular the mountains and the depths of the oceans - and with a scientific affinity that is reflected in his engineering studies at the EPFL, he embarked on the path of exploration in 2006 alongside Jean-Louis Etienne, with whom he worked for two years. Passionate about scuba diving, driven by a strong curiosity and sensitive to the threat of global warming and the impact of man on the planet, he created the Under The Pole expeditions in 2008. For 10 years, he led underwater exploration missions in the Arctic, around three major expeditions: Under The Pole I in 2010, to document the underwater world of the ice pack in the heart of the Arctic Ocean; Under The Pole II in 2014 and 2015, for which he acquired the sailing boat ""WHY"", for a systematic exploration of the west coast of Greenland and a wintering in the ice; and finally the first part of Under The Pole III in 2017 with the crossing of the Northwest Passage and its research programme on natural fluorescence. The continuation of Under The Pole III marks a break with the first missions with the arrival in a ""warm"" climate, in French Polynesia, and two outstanding missions: the ""DeepHope"" programme in 2018 and 2019, and its 12 months of deep dives to study crepuscular corals in collaboration with the CNRS and the CRIOBE, then the ""Capsule"" mission in 2019, to observe the life of the reef in continuous immersion from an underwater habitat specially developed by the Under The Pole team. In 2020, Ghislain is preparing the final mission of Under The Pole III, which will take place in the deep south between December 2020 and March 2021, to study the polar underwater biodiversity of the Antarctic Peninsula.
For 14 years, including 12 at the head of Under The Pole, Ghislain has been on a series of expeditions - with his wife Emmanuelle and his two boys Robin (9 years old) and Tom (5 years old) - which have been strongly marked by polar and deep diving. Each expedition has brought its own difficulties and riches, numerous striking images and an increasingly strong desire to devote his missions to scientific research, innovation and awareness-raising, in the service of better knowledge and preservation of the oceans. This path, which took on its full meaning during the latest DeepHope and Capsule expeditions, is laying the foundations for Under The Pole IV, which will be dedicated to the United Nations' 2021-2030 decade of ocean sciences for sustainable development."

Philosophe des sciences, maître de conférences

Université catholique de Lyon

"Mathieu Guillermin, philosopher of science, is particularly interested in questions raised by the articulation of discourses, methodologies and practices associated with different fields of knowledge. From the very beginning of his academic career in physics, Mathieu Guillermin has been confronted with philosophical issues associated with the interpretation of quantum physics. This questioning led him to explore broader issues, such as the relationship between different rational investigations, or pluralism in science.
Mathieu Guillermin joined the BIOGOV research unit of the Centre de Philosophie du Droit at the Université Catholique de Louvain as a postdoctoral researcher (2012-2016). There, he contributed to interdisciplinary research concerning sustainable development, studying the philosophical and epistemological challenges associated with research practices establishing themselves across disciplinary boundaries. In the course of this research, the need to reconsider both the role of contexts in research processes and the significance of related phenomena of incommensurability became increasingly prominent. The development of an original perspective on these issues was, for Mathieu, the occasion to carry out a second round of doctoral research, this time in philosophy of science.
In October 2016, Mathieu joined the Epistemology and Ethics of Science and Technology Group of the General Biology Laboratory of the Catholic University of Lyon."

Directeur RD & Innovation

"Passionate about High-Tech and innovation for more than 40 years, I have made this passion my profession. I was able to develop my experience within large groups, such as HP or Cap Gemini, but also to enrich it within SMEs and start-ups.
With an initial technical background (INSA Lyon engineer, Master of Science at McGill University, author or co-author of about 20 international patents), I discovered Marketing and Business in the field.
With 30 years of experience and this dual skill set, a conviction has become deeply rooted in me over time: that technology is only valuable if it finds its market.
Through my position at Minalogic, I now have an ideal observatory of industry in the Rhône-Alpes region and of the development of companies, large and small, through differentiation and innovation.
I am lucky enough to work in a field that is transforming the world, and every year I support around 40 companies at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. As a judge for the famous CES Innovation Awards, I am also involved in some of the show's key events, such as Showstoppers LaunchIt, where I am also one of the judges for the Startup of the Year.
After having managed international R&D teams, led Business Unit operations, been Secretary General of the HP Management Committee in France, and contributed to the economic development of my region, I am looking for new opportunities close to the market and to the business in order to participate in its strategy and development."
